"I once was a millionaire, but my mother threw out my
baseball cards." Have you ever heard that one? Well, my mother was one of the few
mothers who did not throw out her son’s baseball cards. While I’m definitely not
a millionaire, my old baseball cards did introduce me to a very rich and fulfilling hobby.
After I retired from twenty years in the Air
Force, I was looking for another career. My mother had recently "returned" the
1950’s and 60’s baseball cards I enjoyed when I was a kid. I started looking
into selling them. I priced them and took them to a local mall sports card show. I
didn’t know what to expect, but as the day wore on, I found myself selling baseball
cards. I thought, "This is pretty good, people are actually paying me money for my
old baseball cards!" One thing led to another and now I am a full time sports card
dealer. That was several years ago. I have long since expanded into basketball, football
and hockey cards in addition to baseball cards.
Living in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, just across the St.
Mary’s River from Canada, I find myself deep in hockey country, so I deal a lot in
hockey cards. While I enjoy dealing in all four sports, hockey is definitely number one
locally. The Soo enjoys a rich hockey heritage. People here love to reminisce about the
three national hockey championships that Lake Superior State University, the local
college, won. Our neighbors across the river are equally enthusiastic about the Soo
Greyhounds, the Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, minor league hockey team. Their impressive list
of alumni includes the Great One himself, Wayne Gretzky. Sault Ste. Marie is best known
for the locks that allow massive iron ore ships to successfully navigate between Lake
Superior and the rest of the Great Lakes. But, in the fall, when the tourists are gone,
look out, it’s time to drop the puck!
If I seem to offer a lot in hockey cards, there is a good
reason. But please ask me about other sports, too. I truly enjoy working with fans of all
four sports and will do my best to help you with all your sports card needs. |
